Of the living; but the dead returning lightly dance.

A War Poem Inspired by the Suvla Bay Operation

Francis Ledwidge, the Irish war poet whom we remembered in our 3 August 2013 posting (link) was killed in the battle of Passchendaele. He had, however, also served in the Suvla operation at Gallipoli and recalled that experience in perhaps his most moving work.

  1. A beautiful poem. Not easy to fully understand at first, but when I worked at it I was well rewarded for my efforts. Thank you!

  2. Ledwidge's birthday is this month -- the 19th. It's wonderful to see more sharing of his poetry.
