Stop 13: Retreat from Mons, Part II







By 27 August, parts of the retreating BEF were coming unraveled. However, a great deed of personal leadership would overcome a crisis, and eventually General French's two corps would reunite and proceed to cross the River Marne. There they would regroup and eventually return to play a key role in the rapidly approaching crisis along the Marne.

  1. Three Victoria Crosses were awarded as a result of the Nerys action, to Captain Edward Bradbury [posthumously], Battery Sergeant-Major George Dorrell, and Sergeant David Nelson. L Battery Royal Horse Artillery is still officially entitled L (Nerys) Battery. The 12-pounder gun they used is in the Imperial War Museum
